Condom Broke? Here’s How to Protect Yourself Quickly and Safely

Condoms are a key tool for protecting sexual health, preventing sexually transmitted infections (STIs), and avoiding unintended pregnancies. But even the most reliable condoms can sometimes break or slip, leaving you exposed. Knowing your options and acting fast is crucial.

What Is Post-Exposure Prophylaxis (PEP)?

Post-exposure prophylaxis (PEP) is a lifesaving intervention for preventing HIV infection after potential exposure, such as a condom mishap or other high-risk sexual activity. PEP involves a short course of antiretroviral medication taken ideally within 24 hours, but no later than 72 hours, to dramatically reduce the risk of HIV transmission. If you suspect HIV exposure, seek medical attention immediately to determine if PEP is right for you.

Doxy-PEP: Protecting Against Bacterial STIs

Beyond HIV, condom breaks can expose you to bacterial STIs like chlamydia, gonorrhea, and syphilis. Doxy-PEP is a preventive regimen of doxycycline that can significantly lower your risk. To be effective, Doxy-PEP should be started within 24–72 hours after exposure:

  • Syphilis: ~90% protection
  • Chlamydia & Gonorrhea: ~60% protection

Doxy-PEP is most effective when paired with regular STI testing and is intended as a supplement—not a replacement—for condoms, HIV PEP, or emergency contraception.

PCR Multiplex Testing: Detect Multiple STIs Quickly

Some STIs can remain “silent” for weeks or months, showing no symptoms but still causing damage or being transmitted to partners. PCR Multiplex testing is an advanced method that detects multiple STIs at once—from a single sample of urine, swab, or blood. It can identify infections like chlamydia, gonorrhea, syphilis, trichomoniasis, and more even before symptoms appear.

Pairing PCR Multiplex testing with Doxy-PEP gives you a strong protective strategy: early detection and prevention in one comprehensive approach.

Prevent Unintended Pregnancy

Condom mishaps can also lead to unintended pregnancies. Emergency contraception, often called the “morning-after pill” or Plan B, is most effective when taken as soon as possible—ideally within 48 hours, but can still work up to 72 hours after unprotected sex. Remember, it prevents pregnancy but does not terminate an existing one.

Take Action Now

After a condom break, acting quickly protects your sexual health:

  • HIV PEP: Take within 72 hours if at risk
  • Doxy-PEP: Start within 24–72 hours to prevent bacterial STIs
  • PCR Multiplex Testing: Detect multiple STIs early
  • Emergency Contraception: If pregnancy is a concern

Being informed and proactive is key to staying safe, healthy, and confident.
